GENERATIONAL CURSE by ICECOLDBISHOP

Hailing from Los Angeles, ICECOLDBISHOP delivered one of the best projects of 2023. If you ask mainstream media or radio fans, 2023 has been a struggle for rap compared to other genres success and numbers. These people are wrong, but mostly, uninformed. Specifically, they just have not listened to enough new artists like ICECOLDBISHOP.

GENERATIONAL CURSE is a masterpiece, aptly named, and so deeply true to ICECOLDBISHOP's Los Angeles roots. I will spare comparisons, but I am sure you will find the sound of the album an authentic West Coast vibe throughout.

In the song by song breakdown, we will dive into each these tracks further, and in doing so, get a better look into the generational curses that he discusses throughout each track, and better learn about ICECOLDBISHOP and why we need to keep an eye out for his surely future success.

TOP 3 TRACKS

  • OUT THE WINDOW
  • FOCUSED

Honorable Mention: TIL THE END

FULL FLEDGE

This is a perfect song to open an album to. The beat, the storytelling, it makes for a perfect "allow me to reintroduce myself" type track to let the listener quickly absorb a heavy dose of the life and content that this album is set to highlight. Most importantly, it covers the basis for the generational curses that serve as theme for the album.

CANDLELIGHT

Another mellow beat over an eerie piano beat with perfectly placed bass that allows the storytelling to take center stage. Set to the theme of everything that comes before a candlelight vigil, the generational curse theme is in full effect on this one as well.

OUT THE WINDOW

This is one of my favorite songs on the album. The beat that allows ICECOLDBISHOP's storytelling to shine. Only three tracks in and the album starts to take on a 'movie in the mind' type feel.

THE GOV'T GAVE US GUNS

A short track at just under 2 minutes, the content of this track was powerful, as you can tell from the title. Packing a punch of quick raps, direct speak and hard hitting content this track does well to address that some generational curses are applied to people, as much as chosen and continued.

D.A.R.E.

"My cousin did it first now she got no veins". A track written to the imagery of the curses of drugs and their destruction, I almost feel out of place to say how much I enjoy the playful shifts in tone, pitch, and vocal delivery on this track.

Then at the half way point, the beat makes a subtle shift that allows ICECOLDBISHOP to shift energy as well and carry this track to a close.

FOCUSED

It would be hard to not listen to this song and think of another kid from California that grew up in a certain ... city. Instead of highlighting that comparison directly, I hope this track simply serves as the cornerstone for why ICECOLDBISHOP deserves recognition for what he can do and why this album is 2023's shining light.

By the halfway point, when the beat switches and infuses some R&B vocals, this song easily closes its position as another of my top tracks.

LAST NIGHT

This track is masterful storytelling, though by now it has come to be expected on this album. The simple chorus, simple beat, once again allows ICECOLDBISHOP to get the spotlight on his storytelling. However, I do think that his rapping is a bit more pointed on this track.

BAD INFLUENCES FROM MY UNCLE

The first several bars of this track are perfection. This track may be the best and direct speaking to generational curses, due to it directly speaking to the things taught by his uncle.

Another track that features a half way through beat shift, this one is exceptionally done as the content got darker and darker after this shift.

DICKIES SUIT

This track may have the most commercial replay value. Cannot put my finger on why, but I feel that people will replay this one. Anyone that ever wore any Dickies going to spin this in the car with the windows down.

Not taking away from the content, but less storytelling on this track allows for ICECOLDBISHOP to show his ability to just RAP and build out a hit.

I CANT SWIM

The delivery is ferocious on this one, it feels like he is fighting with someone from the jump. The hook and chorus change pace and add an artistic element as they deliver on the theme from the title.

There is a set of horns in the background that are very reminiscent of the "Deep Waters" track by Dr. Dre, though do not quote me on them being identical or sampled.

TIL THE END

Listen to the first 30 seconds of this one, intently. There is a lot of content on this album that if not listened to, and only heard, it might sound like a glorification of the curses, but that could be anything from true and this track highlights this better than any of them.

Such a well written song, it was hard to not put this in the top. For the first time in writing these, I added this track as an Honorable Mention.

PRAY FOR OUR GENERATION

In the tone of an interlude, this track felt well timed and needed after the last. I am unsure who did the vocals, but thank you.

CURSED

In the closing track of the album, I feel the entirety of the album was summarized and condensed and covered on this track.

The energy shifts throughout the track, giving a near "rock" shift in the middle, that underscores the inner struggle of a "mind racing" and "anticipation" that is a central topic of the track.

After the last two tracks, and what felt like a 'beating of the generation curse', this track felt like a resurgence to old ways, and an understanding of some curses that will never be broken.
