Sunburn by Dominic Fike

The Naples, Florida-born musician/actor/creator drops SUNBURN and to be fair, I was not sure what to expect. Dominic Fike has a few tracks that have been catchy enough to make my monthly playlists, but stringing a whole album of 'play and forget' quality songs is tough.

Possibly the best title I would give to Dominic is 'creator'. As you listen to the album you feel Dominic's freedom to try different sounds and vocal patterns that give this album its summer vibe.

While Dancing In The Courthouse may have stood out as a single, I was pleasently surprised to find several other gyms on the album that I think will resonate as must haves on anyones summer playlist.

Overall, this album has enough creativity, playfulness and spirit to be played through without an urge to skip. I ordered the vinyl and would recommend anyone else to do the same.

How Much Is Weed?

This track did an excellent job at setting the tone for the entire album. What I appreciate the most about this song is the tempo. In many ways it is one of the speedier songs but does a great job letting you feel that this album is meant to be an upbeat experience despite any content to come.

Ant Pile

Another song that follows the upbeat vibe of the first track, a song just over 2 minutes in length that has the feel of the last day of school. The guitar riffs in the background make this a must listen to while driving on a sunny day.

Think Fast (feat. Weezer)

This is one of the first songs on the album that made me stop and replay it after. I knew once I saw Weezer featured, we were likely in for a treat. I felt that Dominic knew he had to elevate the sound and he brought some of his best on this. Plenty more I could say, but go experience this one yourself..

Sick

With the last track feeling a bit more serious, the album quickly bounces back to the playful roots on Sick. I am convinced that Dominic wrote the entirety of this album in somewhere with impeccable weather.

7 Hours

This track is my favorite on the album. I am a sucker for a catchy hook and chorus over a guitar strum. This song has that going for it, along with a certain level of audio mastering that I appreciate. They almost faded Dominic's vocals into the instruments. The blend and sound that it creates is music to the ears.. pun intended.

Dancing In The Courthouse

If you have listened to any radio or playlist this summer you have likely already heard this track. It is a good synopsis of the entirety of this album. So if you have enjoyed this track but have not listened to the album yet, it gives a good taste of what to expect.

Mona Lisa

Another track you might have already heard or danced to already, assuming you dance better than I do. This track is easily one of the best vibes on the album as far as the upbeat vibe and general wholesomeness.

Bodies

Dominic has a great ability to speak on topics in a way that allows you to listen to songs in 2 different capacities.. just vibe, or vibe and learn. This song should be played twice. First, just vibe and enjoy. Second, listen to the content and the story of his lyrics.

Sunburn

"Southern Florida I was raised in the Sun". I think that sums up the album well, but definitely this track. As the title track I expected the vibes that this song brings but I like that its angle was a bit more of a longing for summer to remain. Not moving too fast, recalling memories, and all the things that summer memories provide us.

Pasture Child

I apprecaite the creative storytelling throughout this album but this song really shines in that regard. It seems like many musicians today just say exactly what they think, I appreciate this songs imagery and story it tells.

4x4

The album has noticeably started to slow down a bit with this song and the last. The feeling that summer is coming to an end, that sort of vibe now takes over in this track. The vocals here are great, but the guitar that fills this song is so well placed I could listen to an instrumental only version of this.

Frisky

The flows Dominic uses at about 1-minute in make this song for me. I am appreciating the various vocal flows this album is showing and this song is a standout for that.

Mama's Boy

Don't tell my mom, but this is likely my least favorite song on this album. And even then, still not bad enough to skip, just not my favorite. It has a fun vibe to it, but with all of the other songs on this album, one had to be least favorite, right?

Dark

"I'll be gone like summer".. The sequencing of this album, with this being the second to last song, is something to mention. This song feels like the unwinding of a long summer day. The switch-up and movement that comes later in the song really add to the experience this song provides.

What Kinda Woman

It was not until this track that I even considered an undertone of maybe some heartbreak in this album. This album almost hides it under the playful instrumentals and playful spirit. This track feels like a perfect curtain call.
